Duane Rosengard joined The Philadelphia Orchestra in December 1986. His earlier professional experiences included the Rochester and Buffalo philharmonics as well as the Orquesta Sinfónica de Veracruz in Mexico. Born in Chicago he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and the Cleveland Institute of Music. He donates his time to teaching young bassists in the Delaware Valley region.
Mr. Rosengard also devotes his time to the scholarly study of stringed instruments from the 16th century to the present. He has published numerous articles in journals, encyclopedias, and magazines in Italy, England, Germany, and the United States. His books include Cremonese Double Basses (1992); Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù (1998), which also was published in Beijing in a Mandarin language edition in 2017; The Stradivari Legacy (1998); Giovanni Battista Guadagnini (2000); The Late Cremonese Violin Makers (2002); Carlo Bergonzi (2010); and Paolo Diana “detto Spagnoletti” (2018). Mr. Rosengard has also contributed organological criticism and historical essays for the catalogues of exhibitions held in Cremona, New York, Washington D.C., London, and Brescia.
Additionally, Mr. Rosengard acts as expert consultant for stringed instrument owners, collectors, and dealers worldwide and is a frequent lecturer at the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers, the Entente Internationale de Maître Luthiers, the Violin Society of America, and the International Society of Bassists. For the past several years he has been preparing a book about the Parisian bow makers the Tourte brothers.
