William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 3 (“The Sunday Symphony”) displays this prodigious composer’s many gifts, conjuring images of a joyous, prayerful celebration of faith. His own faith in the possibility of a better day persisted despite repeated barriers to his acceptance as a great American artist. His work pairs beautifully with Beethoven’s richly hued “Pastoral” Symphony, presenting an opportunity to consider two seminal composers in one program showcasing their greatness.
