Acclaimed conductor Dalia Stasevska returns to conduct Mahler’s serenely lovely Fourth Symphony on a program with Barber’s melodic Violin Concerto, performed here by violinist Augustin Hadelich, a riveting artist who “appears to fuse entirely with the violin, as if he were the human personification of a glissando” (Bachtrack).
Augustin Hadelich has performed to acclaim around the world; his 2023 performance with The Philadelphia Orchestra was a revelation, as described by Bachtrack: “Hadelich’s skill as a performer extends beyond his instrument. He is a fascinating presence onstage, riveting in his stillness and active listening even when he’s not playing. It said a lot to watch the rapt attention the orchestral musicians lavished upon him.” He performs Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, a masterwork by a great American composer. The Philadelphia Orchestra gave the Concerto’s world premiere in 1941; for Barber, born in West Chester, it was a homecoming.
Ukrainian-born Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska wowed audiences in her 2023 debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra. She returns with a program that displays the breadth and intelligence of her musical choices, beginning with John Adams’s terrific Short Ride in a Fast Machine, a super-charged four-and-a-half-minute blast that challenges the orchestra and raises the pulse of the audience. It’s a fabulous curtain-raiser for this program, which closes with Mahler’s serenely lovely Fourth Symphony.
